Workshop #1: Cindy Richard – COLLAGED ANIMAL PORTRAITS
I’m offering a fun twist to collaged portraits! Today’s project will be collaged animal portraits. You can choose to work from a photo of your own pet, a wild animal you’ve photographed, or even create a creature from your imagination. The portrait will be constructed using 4–5 fabrics, selected according to the number of contrasting values in your image.
Choosing a Photo:
- Pick a photo where the animal’s features are clearly visible.
- Good lighting is essential—ideally from the side or front.
- Strong contrast will make the portrait more successful.
Preparing Fabrics:
Before class, I’ll create a custom pattern for you based on your photo. You’ll need to select 4–5 fabrics ranging in value from very light to very dark. See the attached procedures for arranging values for either Android or Apple.
- Fabric #1: Very light (set aside with no Mistyfuse or pattern applied)
- Fabrics #2–5: Light → medium → medium dark → very dark
Fabric Tips:
- Small- or medium-scale prints work well.
- You can choose natural colors to match the animal, or go wild with colorful, imaginative hues. Either approach works as long as the values transition clearly from light to dark and the fabrics blend well.
- I’ll ask you to send me photos of your fabric selections so I can confirm they’ll work for the pattern.
How to Organize Your Fabrics:
Follow the attached instructions for Android or Apple devices to evaluate fabric values.
Once your set is approved, prepare your fabrics as follows:
- Iron Mistyfuse to the back of fabrics #2–#5.
- Print 5 copies of your posterized black & white pattern (A4, “fit to page” on regular copy paper.).
- Spray temporary adhesive on the back of each pattern copy.
- Adhere one pattern each to the front of fabrics #2–#5.
- Set aside one pattern copy for reference.
Supplies to Bring to Class:
- Sharp scissors
- Cutting board
- Ruler
- Rotary cutters (18mm and 45mm)
- Sharpie marker
- Teflon sheet
- Iron (please confirm if Aguda will provide these)
We’ll assemble the portraits together during class—looking forward to seeing your animal creations come to life in fabric.
